Find out how AARP Arizona worked for you during the 2006 session of the Arizona Legislature, one of the longest in state history. Read the AARP Arizona 2006 Legislative Report, a wrap-up of this year’s legislative activities affecting aging services.
The report highlights the many successes achieved by AARP Arizona’s Advocacy Network of volunteers who worked alongside our community partners: the Arizona Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the Foundation for Senior Living, PAFCO, (Protecting Arizona’s Family Coalition) and other aging advocates. We thank them for helping us achieve so much during the session.
Among the legislative victories—a $6.8 million allocation to be used to increase the number of individuals receiving home and community-based services (HCBS). “It wasn’t easy but in a year when the state’s budget surplus ran over a billion dollars, it was the right thing for the Legislature to do: adequately fund aging services for the first time in many years,” said AARP Arizona Associate State Director of Advocacy Lupe Solis. “In the end, lawmakers saw the value of HCBS for frail, vulnerable elderly.”
Also read about additional funding allocated to increase the number of Adult Protective Services (APS) workers who respond to reports of elder abuse. And find out how grandparents caring for their grandchildren full time will now be able to receive financial relief under new legislation.
AARP Arizona’s biggest victory was the defeat of six “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” (TABOR) proposals. TABOR is an initiative that strictly limits state and local government spending through a formula involving population growth and the rate of inflation. AARP thanks the Arizonans Against a Bad Idea Coalition for helping us defeat TABOR this year.
AARP Arizona encourages you to read the AARP Arizona 2006 Legislative Report and we invite you to share it with your friends and family!
