The Billionaire Who Wasn't
An unassuming man, Chuck Feeney made billions as co-founder of Duty Free Shops, which first sold tax-exempt goods to American soldiers abroad and then tapped into the rise of mass tourism. Believing that “giving while living” is the best approach to addressing the injustices of our time, he signed almost all his fortune over to his foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, in 1987. Although not well known, his organization was outdone last year only by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ford Foundation. To purchase the book visit amazon.com.
Atlantic Philanthropies has several programs to meaningfully improve lasting changes in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The organization has four areas of concentration:
Through its “Ageing” initiative, the foundation reshapes attitudes about age while giving practical help to older populations.
Programs for disadvantaged children and youth provide the educational and health resources to make kids’ lives substantially better.
The “Population Health” program strengthens the health-care systems in South Africa and Vietnam.
Full respect for all vulnerable members of society is the objective of the charity’s “Reconciliation & Human Rights” program.
