About 30,000 more households will be able to receive help through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) thanks to $6 million in state funds that has been added to the state's budget.
The $6 million is in addition to $9 million provided by the federal government.
"This additional funding means that more people who qualify for LIHEAP will be able to get help with their heating and cooling costs," said Mike Donnelly, AARP New Mexico advocacy director.
"Too often, people on limited incomes, especially senior citizens, are forced to choose between keeping their housing climate livable or other vital items like food or medications," Donnelly said. "These additional funds mean more people won't have to make that choice."
LIHEAP doesn't just help people with their gas bill. The program also helps low income people meet the costs of keeping their homes cool in the summer as well as those who use alternative fuel methods in the winter, such as propane or wood for a wood burning stove.
To apply for LIHEAP funding call the New Mexico Human Services Department at 1-800-283-4465 or online. Applications can also be filed at your local Human Services Department Office.
