Senior Attorney Volunteers for the Elderly
By: Source: AARP Foundation Date Posted: 2007-06-07
Senior attorney volunteers can help low-income older persons with legal problems through a nationwide program called SAVE. SAVE is sponsored by LCE, the American Bar Association’s Senior Lawyers Division, and the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging.
The program’s goal is to encourage senior lawyers to create a local SAVE program—a local network of senior attorney volunteers for the elderly. LCE takes calls and letters from interested volunteers, and matches these individuals with appropriate local legal services providers. Copies of "Senior Attorney Volunteer Projects: A Resource Manual" which includes a blueprint for a successful program as well as information on current successful senior attorney volunteer programs nationwide, are mailed to the volunteer and the appropriate provider.
Although the program is based on the philosophy of local control, the sponsors are available to assist as needed.
