Reno's Hot August Nights celebration is a "blast from the past" where baby boomers can relive the 50s and 60s and others who didn't experience those happy days can share the fun. It's all about hot rods, music, and fun.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is excited to be a sponsor of Reno's Hot August Nights because of our mutual love affair with hot cars and rock and roll music from the 50s and 60s. But more than that, both organizations are committed to promoting fun and safe driving, especially to drivers over 50.

Come by our booth to learn about classes for improving your driving safety and how you may be eligible for a discount on your car insurance.

Like our music, the practice of driving has changed significantly over the decades. Many of the rules that you remember from your early driving days no longer pertain. For example:

  • The correct hand position on the steering wheel today is 8 and 4 o'clock, not the earlier learned position of 10 and 2 o'clock. This change accommodates air bag inflation without arm injury.
  • Today's anti-lock brakes pump the brakes for you, for safer and more controlled stopping. So you no longer need to manually "pump" the brakes like you were originally taught.
  • And perhaps your physical capacities have changed, like wearing glasses, or you have slower reaction times.

About the AARP Driver Safety Program

The AARP Driver Safety Program, which is administered by the AARP Foundation, has offered safety refresher courses since 1979 to more than 11 million drivers. The goal is to help older drivers better understand updated technologies in vehicles, be refreshed on the rules of the road and learn strategies to compensate for age-related changes.

In addition to addressing the changes noted above, our courses cover:

  • How to share the road with impaired or aggressive drivers, busses, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles
  • Hazards in driving such as cell phone usage, extraneous noises, and other distractions
  • A review of highway markings and signage, how to drive safely in construction zones, intersections and on/off highway ramps
  • An assessment of your own safe driving knowledge and skills

AARP Driver Safety courses are taught by trained volunteer instructors in a classroom setting, for a cost of $10. Find information on courses online or call 1-866-664-5370.
