Someone in your neighborhood needs your help. Most Ohioans want to remain living at home as long as possible. Remaining independent often depends on the availability of services delivered at home or provided by the community. When the ability to drive, handle errands and perform household chores becomes limited, it can have a dramatic impact on an individual's sense of independence and daily life. That's where you can help.
AARP has joined hands with several Faith in Action programs to make a difference in the lives of your neighbors in communities throughout Ohio. Over the next several months we will spotlight some of these relationships, beginning with Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc. in Belmont County.
Whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, your time can help others maintain their independence.
As part of the AARP team for Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc., you can participate in a wide range of volunteer opportunities including:
- Grocery shopping
- Running errands
- Escorted transportation to medical appointments
- Friendly visits
- Minor repairs
- Yard chores
- Respite for family caregivers
- Office work
- Volunteer support
- Help with fund raising projects
"Since 1995, our volunteers have given over 44,000 hours of free services to more than 1,800 people," said Jeanette Wojcik, Executive Director of Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc.
Wojcik also noted that the most frequently requested service is transportation with over 20,500 hours devoted to this service alone.
Currently, Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc. serves 767 people, giving more than 2,000 hours of service in January through July 2006.
As a volunteer, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped someone and made your community a better place to live. You will meet new friends who share your values of providing service to others in need. The neighbors you serve will know that they have someone to rely on, lessening the fear of losing their independence and providing peace of mind for families and caregivers who can't always be there.
If you would like to help in your community by volunteering with Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc., simply complete this online form and be sure to check the "Independent Living one-to-one service" box underneath the "Community Service" heading.
Faith in Action Caregivers will work with you to provide a two-hour training program and create a schedule that meets your needs and availability. Remember, all volunteers are welcome and needed, regardless of the amount of time you can give or the way in which you are able to serve.
