The Second Annual Democracy Day at the Legislature, co-sponsored by AARP Utah, the Utah Housing Coalition and Utah Community Action Partnership Association, is a citizen action and education event to bring together Utahns with their state legislators. It will be held Jan. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It is a unique opportunity for participants to hear speakers, attend sessions on issues such as health care, predatory lending, financial security, and housing, learn how a bill becomes a law, take a tour the newly renovated capitol and join their legislators for lunch and conversation.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Elaine Ryan, Director of State and Intergovernmental Affairs from AARP's national office. She will be speaking on citizen advocacy--- how to be effective when talking to state legislators, how to have your issue heard and why it makes a difference when citizens are advocates.
The day begins at the State Office Building Auditoroium at the State Capitol Complex. Breakout sessions will be held in the East Building adjacent to the State Office Building and a box lunch will be provided in the Capitol Rotunda.
The entire event including the box lunch is free but requires registration. Online registration will be taken by UCAPA on their Web site. Registrants will be given directions on how to park in a free lot downtown, which has a free shuttle up to the Capitol.
