Vladimir Špidla joined the European Commission (EC) in 2004 as the Czech Republic representative. Prior to his appointment to the to the EC, Špidla served as Prime Minister from 2002-2004.
Mr. Špidla began his political career in 1990, serving in many notable positions including Chairman of the Czech Democratic Party (CSSD), First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, and Member of Parliament.
Before entering politics, Vladimir spent 13 years working in various fields and jobs. He has worked as a saw-mill worker, archeaologist, construction worker, and public administrator.
Vladimir Špidla has a Master's and PhD in History and Prehistory from the Charles University of Prague. Some of his hobbies include history, protecting historical monuments, and long-distance running. He is married and has two sons.
