Marion Caspers-Merk is the German Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry. She has served as the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Security and Drug Commissioner of the Federal Government from 2002-2005. Caspers-Merk has also held several Social Democratic Party positions since 1972.
Marion Caspers-Merk was born in Mannheim on 24th April 1955. She is Protestant and lives in the Markgräfler Land. In addition, she is a member of the IG Bergbau, Chemie und Energie (the miners’, chemical and power plant workers’ union), the German Federation for the Environment and the Protection of Nature (BUND e.V.), the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Workers' Welfare Association), the Friends of Nature of Lörrach and the Red Cross.
Her academic career include studies of political science, German language and history at the Universities of Berlin and Freiburg which she completed in 1980 with the obtention of the "Magister" degree. Subsequently, she worked as an academic assistant at a research institute on local government policy, held teaching appointments at the College for Public Administration in Kehl and at the Protestant and Catholic College for Social Affairs in Freiburg. Her work has been published covering areas of local government policy and environmental planning.
