My husband and I are planning a trip to visit a long-time college friend in Seattle. I want to stay near the University, since I attended the University of Washington in the late '60s and want to revisit old haunts. However, my friend said that I would be disappointed, since the area is run-down and not that safe. What's the story? Thanks.

Seattle's University District is many things, but "run-down" and "not that safe" are not descriptors I would put near the top of that list. It's true that there may be a touch of the bohemian in the area, but statistically, the University District is one of the city's safest in terms of violent crime. Anecdotally, Seattle residents I contacted were more likely to describe the area as trendy, lively, or just plain cool.

If you have a special interest in the area, you shouldn't hesitate for a moment to stay in or to visit the University District (or simply the "U" these days). There are a number of hotels in the area that could be a good bet.

Check out the Hotel Deca for a trendy boutique-hotel experience. The University Inn on Roosevelt Way is not fancy, but it's a good value. The Watertown is a more upscale option in the area. You'll also find more typical chains in the area.
