Hi Peter, I am looking to go to a “fat farm” or a health spa this summer for one or two weeks. I want to go out West (Arizona, Wyoming, Utah, etc.). I want a place that will keep me busy all day with exercises, classes/seminars, and the like. I am considering one place called Wellspring Retreats. Is one company better than another, or are they pretty much the same?

Fredericksburg, Va.

Due to its warm, dry climate most of the year, the Southwestern United States is a popular place to go for a health or weight-loss vacation.

Wellspring Retreats offers eight-day rapid weight-loss vacations in North Carolina, Northern California, and Texas. Numerous activities are available to guests, including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hiking, rock climbing, yoga, healthy-cooking classes, and educational seminars that teach you how to continue living healthily even when you return home.

Rancho Cortez is a Texas dude ranch that also offers a fitness program for people looking to get in shape. Guests spend their days hiking, strength training, kickboxing, doing water aerobics, and horseback riding around the 5,000-acre ranch. You can even do “horse yoga.” A registered dietician designs the menus to compliment the fitness program.

The Red Mountain Resort in St. George, Utah, offers a variety of all-inclusive and à la carte options to get in shape against a backdrop of stunning red cliffs and canyons. Red Mountain also offers life-coaching sessions, holistic healing classes, and flavorful-but-healthy southwestern cuisine.

The primary differences you’ll find among health spas are location, pricing, and the types of programs offered. Remember, you have choices, and check out www.tripadvisor.com for personal anecdotes and recommendations. Many recession-starved resorts are offering last-minute deals, and even cash incentives, to lure in customers.
