Q: We are going to be celebrating our golden anniversary next month. We are thinking of taking a trip, but my husband is handicapped—walking is difficult for him, and airplane seats are very small, as he is a big man. No—we can't afford first class—darn!
–Jenny, Appleton, Wis.
A: I’ve got some good news for you, Jenny. You probably can afford a trip, it’ll just take a bit of extra planning. For you, Midwest Airlines is probably the best choice. They offer competitive pricing, but instead of six seats across, it’s only four on their 717 aircraft. Plus, the leg room is far better than most airlines, and the leather seats add some additional comfort.
To get the best price, you’ll probably have to drive down to their hub in Milwaukee, which is about two hours from Appleton. But if you’re willing to spend a bit more, they do offer flights from Appleton to Milwaukee, and from there, you’ve got lots of options, destination-wise. For example, during a quick search in late February, we found tickets from Appleton via Milwaukee to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for $364 per person roundtrip. The price drops by about $45 per person if you drive to Milwaukee, so that’s up to you.
