Q: On July 2008, we are flying to Rochester, N.Y. on 7/10 & returning back to Montana on 7/14. Our return trip is from Toronto, Canada. Car rentals cost too much. Is there a train to Toronto? Or a ferryboat or a bus? A flight or car rental is very costly.

A: Ferry service between Rochester, N.Y. and Toronto may be a possibility in the future, depending on agreements between Rochester and a new private operator for the service. Although a ferry service used to be operated between Rochester and Toronto, it has since been suspended due to numerous financial difficulties and the constant re-selling of the ferry company. This ferry service may make a comeback in 2009 if a private operator chooses to take it over.
Taking the bus is definitely another option. A company called Adirondack Trailways runs bus service between Rochester and Toronto and offers multiple departures daily. This will cost you $39.50 one way.
With a Greyhound bus, a senior fare from Rochester to Toronto will cost $43.55. Both services take four hours and 15 minutes to get from Rochester to Toronto.
For just a bit more, you can take Amtrak between Rochester and Toronto. That route will cost $46, but the journey would only take two-and-a-half to three hours. So until the ferry's problems are sorted out, bus and train are the ways to go between Toronto and Rochester.
