I’m a big fan [of yours]. I have been terrified to fly ever since I was a young boy. I really want to participate in a trip to South America that my family is planning, but it will require a great deal of flying. I was wondering if you had any tips for me about getting over my fear, or if you know where I can go to find such information.

There are actually a number of resources for nervous fliers who are looking to tackle their fears. First, I would recommend skydiving! OK, I’m kidding.
Now let's get serious: Captain Tom Bunn, a retired Pan Am pilot and licensed therapist, offers both a six-week video course and one-on-one phone counseling sessions to help eradicate the fear of flying. Part of his strategy is to teach participants about the inner workings of aircraft so that you won’t be scared by the strange bumps and noises that occur during flight.
Captain Ron Nielsen, a pilot for American Airlines, offers an online course for $57. His course includes two-and-a-half hours of tips and techniques on how to overcome your fears, and facts on why flying really is one of the safest forms of transportation.
Finally, Captain Meryl Getline, who is a retired United Airlines pilot and author, offers a fear-of-flying seminar on CD, and via e-book, for $67. For an extra fee, you can also get a 90-minute consultation. But also consider this: Every day in the United States, more than 33,000 planes are in the air. And we've had a remarkably safe period for many years now.
