Can you please give me a resource that provides information on the best way to get from an airport to a major city using public transportation? I just returned from visiting my son in New York and discovered by accident that one can go from Penn Station all the way to the Newark Airport. It would be great if it was international, but the United States alone is good, too. Thank you.

While there is no single, comprehensive site for mass-transit trip planning, Google is a good place to start. Specifically, http://maps.google.com/ will take you to Google Maps, which allows you to look up directions and how to get from point to point using public transit. In many cases, the options will pop up automatically.

Other useful sources include HopStop.com and UrbanRail.net, which are helpful with airport transportation and general public transportation in any given city. If these sites can't help you, or specifically for smaller cities, check out your destination-airport's Web site. Many airport sites list methods of transportation to the closest major city.

Another good resource is SuperShuttle, which operates in most U.S. cities. Shuttles arrive and depart to and from the airport directly from and to your pick-up/drop-off point. It's a bit more expensive (about $24 including tip from Newark to Manhattan), but it is worth the extra $10 to beat the tedious waiting and schlepping.
