I am taking my entire family to Hawaii this summer, August 7–15. We want to spend one night in Honolulu and then go to Maui for seven nights. We were thinking of the Westin Maui. So far no great deals there. Do you have any suggestions? Two of my grandsons are 18 and two granddaughters, 15. I want to be sure they will have plenty to do. We like nice rooms. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We will fly out of Newark, N.J.

Hi, Robert,

The Maui Westin, although quite a luxurious resort, is also quite costly. For four adults, you are looking at upwards of $700 per night, and if you have even more people in your party—well, you can do the math. For a more economical choice when traveling with many people, you may want to look into renting a condominium, which can be a great value for traveling groups. Renting also means you can save on costs when it comes to cooking meals, and it gives you more space and flexibility.

Vacation Rentals by Owner is a Web site that connects property owners with vacationers like you and your family. There are many options in all regions of Maui, and depending on your geographical preference, you could potentially stay at a three-bedroom beachfront condo for around $550 a night.

A similar site is Home Away, which allows you to search by region, price, and availability. Three-bedroom properties here range from $300 to $1,000 per night.
