Q: We are going to Lourdes, France. What kind of travel problems should we anticipate if we drive a car from Northern Spain?
-Fred, Montgomery, Ala.

A: There are a few things to keep in mind while driving in Spain: You must possess an international driving license, which you can obtain at AAA; the use of cell phones and screen-based navigation systems is not allowed, having at least one visibility vest in the car is compulsory, as are two red warning triangles; and if the driver wears glasses, there must be a spare pair in the vehicle.

The visibility vests must be kept inside the car and put on in the case you need to exit your car if you break down on any highway. The vests are inexpensive reflective jackets (think neon vests for highway work crews) and can be purchased at most supermarkets. All car rental companies provide the vests, but they may charge a deposit to ensure that you return them.

Roads that begin with an "A" are toll roads and usually have significantly less traffic than non-toll roads. However, the non-toll roads, although busier, provide a better view. Most of the country is actually served by "N" roads, which can vary quite dramatically. Some "N" roads are much like expressways, while others have traffic lights. So don't be worried if your paved highway becomes a country road; you're still on the right track! In addition, yellow lines mean "no parking," so be careful where you leave your vehicle.

When getting gas, know that "gasoleo" means Diesel, "sin plomo 98" or "Eurosuper 95" is unleaded, and "Super" or "Super 98" is leaded gasoline. Make sure to know what type your vehicle takes!
