Germany: Getting Older & Getting Down In Deutschland
Images of beer-swilling folks in lederhosen and dirndl might come to mind when one thinks of a German gathering. However, this group swaps the hefeweizen and wurst for their dancing shoes when they get together.
The Bundesverband Seniorentanz e.V. (Federal Association of Senior Dance) offers a different means of exercise to its 7,000 members, primarily for older generations. This 50-plus organization draws on the expertise of former dancers to teach dance instruction to others as well as regular dance courses, such as international folk and ballroom dance styles. Bundesverband Seniorentanz e.V. also offers instruction on how to teach a class to older individuals who are confined to sitting.
Bundesverband Seniorentanz e.V. gives retired dancers the chance to continue utilizing their skills, while helping their peers stay fit and active. While the dancing profession focuses heavily on youth, this organization grants professional dancers an outlet to continue to utilize the skills they have developed over the course of their careers and at the same time help seniors learn new skills and stay active.
This national organization maintains branches throughout the 16 German Lander (states) and provides a group environment in which seniors can stay active while socializing and learning from one another. The classes are arranged by levels, such as beginning and intermediate, and those wishing to be trained in instruction receive a certificate upon completion of their program. The group welcomes all who have an interest in membership and individuals of all generations may join the classes as well. Beyond the obvious benefits of exercise, the dance association facilitates communication between the Lander groups and arranges outings to other areas of the country and abroad. Occasional national events and workshops are organized throughout the year.
