Join the 2003 AARP TriUmph Classic in Irving, Texas

Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a beginner, you'll come out a winner at AARP's TriUmph Classic, an event that could change your life. AARP's TriUmph Classic 50+ Swim-Bike-Run, a short-distance triathlon series designed for all fitness levels, will visit 10 cities in its third year, including Irving, Texas Oct. 5h on the campus of North Lake College (5001 N. MacArthur Boulevard). Presented by AARP to encourage regular physical activity among the most sedentary segment of the adult population, the TriUmph Classic is the only national triathlon series targeting people 50+. AARP initiated the event to help Boomers everywhere not only learn the benefits of regular physical activity but to begin a long-term fitness routine in a peer-supportive, non-intimidating environment.

Sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT), the events are challenging but achievable, even for first time triathletes. The short course triathlon includes a 400 meter (1/4 mile) swim, a 20K (12.4 mile) bike ride and a 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk. AARP welcomes relay teams of two or three people to compete as a group. The TriUmph Classic drew more than 3,100 beginning and seasoned triathletes during the 2002 series, and 90 percent said they'd participate again.

The price for the training is included in the race entry fee of $35 for the TriUmph Classic and $40 for the National Championship. For those who choose to participate as part of a two or three person relay team, registration is $15 per person.

Participants across the country have enjoyed their TriUmph Classic experiences, and many said the regular physical activity has had a positive impact on their health, increasing their energy and reducing their stress level. Some participants completed multiple TriUmph Classic events.

Comments from participants included:
"This was just the type of 'no-pressure' event to help me get back into shape."
"I feel both a strong sense of relief and accomplishment after competing and completing this triathlon!"
"I'm ready to do another one, now that I know I can do it."
