The USS Reuben James was attacked by a German U-boat off the coast of Iceland in the predawn hours of Halloween, the first United States warship sunk during World War Two. Only 44 sailors out of a crew of 149 survived the icy waters. Adam Allington has the story of petty officer Bob Howard - one of the lucky 44.
