Our volunteers use their time and experience to help Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries protect their identity, and read their Medicare Summary Notices and medical statements. They work one-on-one with beneficiaries, give presentations to groups and represent the SMP at local events. You will be trained as an SMP volunteer for this important work with seminars, personalized help and information you can take home to study.

The ombudsman program volunteers and legal interns continue to strengthen and augment the advocacy efforts for District residents receiving long-term care services in nursing homes, assisted living residences and community residential facilities.
Trained volunteer ombudsmen regularly visit long-term care facilities, monitor conditions and care, and provide a voice for those unable to speak for themselves.
