AARP Response to 1/6 Republican Debate in Manchester
Post-Debate Statement From AARP NH State Director Kelly Clark
"These debates are supposed to provide a forum for the Democratic and Republican candidates to share their substantive ideas about how they can help alleviate the day to day concerns of millions of Americans, as well as an opportunity to talk about how they would end the partisan gridlock plaguing our government.
"Tonight we saw some of that. During the Republican debate tonight, there was an in depth discussion about the health care crisis, with a thoughtful discussion about health care cost, quality and coverage. The Democrats, though not as in depth, also discussed health care.
"Americans remain concerned about retirement security. These issues are intertwined with the health care crisis and deserve equal attention from our nation's leaders.
"In entrance polling in Iowa conducted by the Associated Press, as well in AARP's own polling in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida, our members and others see access to affordable health care and financial security as key issues in the election. These issues are front and center for American families and they deserve continued attention as the candidates make their closing arguments to voters in New Hampshire.
"Finally, we hope having both parties' candidates on stage is more than a metaphor and whoever is elected in November 2008, they will be committed to finding solutions to the challenges faced by all generations."
