AARP Joins WPBT for a Day on TV

On October 7th, AARP's Divided We Fail volunteers and staff members had their dreams of television stardom met while also spreading important messages about their initiative to the community.

Along with WPBT Channel 2, five volunteers and three staff members helped answer the phones for three hours to take pledge donations that help the public television station operate. As part of the program, AARP was mentioned and thanked on-air several times for its participation in the pledge drive.

In addition to helping make WPBT's pledge drive a hit, AARP was also able to give contact information such as telephone numbers and website information, mention upcoming Divided We Fail events and demonstrate its commitment to the importance of public service.

The event was a great experience for all that participated.

"It was a lot of fun," said Miami-Dade/South. Broward Field Coordinator Leo Scarpati. "AARP had its name out their three times during the event, and our volunteers had a great time being on television."

AARP Divided We Fail volunteers also joined in on the fun, getting to experience a day as television stars.

"It was great," said volunteer Ivonne Fernandez. "My son got to watch his mother be a television star for a day."

Rich Schneider, President of Channel 2, along with Arlene Wites of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale were the hosts of the television pledge drive. The event was a success as the WPBT took in around $15,000 dollars in donations.
