AARP Colorado Offers Driver Safety Courses

The AARP Driver Safety Online Course has been recognized as an approved driver education course for drivers 50 years of age and older by the Colorado Department of Revenue-Division of Motor Vehicles. This means drivers 55 years of age or older may be eligible for a reduction in their automobile insurance premiums after completing this course.

“This is positive for seniors on two levels: They can refresh their driving skills and get a discount on car insurance,” said Bob Schneller, AARP Colorado’s driver safety program coordinator in Grand Junction. “Under Colorado law, insurance companies are required to give this discount to older drivers, but drivers have to get signed up and complete the course, successfully.”

In addition, AARP is opening the door for more people to take advantage of driver safety courses and insurance savings by offering the convenience of taking the class online.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that the AARP Driver Safety Program Online Course is included as an approved course for the required discount,” Colorado Driver Education Compliance Manager Carol Olds said in a letter welcoming AARP’s online course.

The online course presents the same information as the AARP classroom version, taught nationwide by 9,000 AARP volunteers. The AARP Driver Safety Program has provided instruction to more than 12 million participants over the past 30 years in the classroom setting.  Now, this same valuable information is available via the Internet.

According to the most recent data from the Federal Highway Administration, there are about 82 million licensed drivers age 50 and older in the United States – about 40 percent of all drivers. According to U.S. government figures, this percentage is expected to increase significantly.

“AARP is committed to keeping the roads safe for everyone, helping drivers stay safe and expanding the availability of driver safety education programs,” said AARP State Director Morie Smile. “AARP research shows 64 percent of our members are regular Internet users and this tool presents an opportunity to reach millions more. Now people who take the Driver Safety Online Course can receive the same instruction as those who have taken the course in the classroom.”

The AARP Driver Safety Online Course is designed to educate participants about how to reduce traffic violations, crashes and injury, as well as update knowledge about laws and provide safe strategies to compensate for age-related changes that affect one’s driving ability. The course stresses the importance of monitoring one’s own and others’ driving skills and capabilities.

The cost of the program is $15.95 for AARP members and $19.95 for non-members. While it’s for older drivers, the course is open to any age. So far this year, 6,500 Coloradans have taken classes.
