AARP Texas offers Driver Safety Program

Quick: In Texas, how far must you stop behind a school bus with flashing lights? Where should you place your hands on the steering wheel? How far from the wheel should you sit?

If you have forgotten the answers to these questions or think they haven’t changed since you first got your driver’s license, you are a prime candidate for the AARP Driver Safety Program.

AARP offers driver safety courses across the state designed to help drivers age 50+ learn safety strategies and tips to help them adapt to the physical and mental changes related to aging.

Courses cover an array of useful material such as learning how to monitor your own and your loved ones’ driving capabilities, how to minimize the dangers of blind spots, how traffic laws have changed, and how medication can alter your reaction time.

“Not only does the program train students to develop better driving habits, but it also benefits the community as a whole because we now have more alert drivers on the road,” said Henry Hernandez, a Fort Worth-based Driver Safety coordinator.

Over the past 30 years more than 12 million participants in the United States have enrolled in the AARP Driver Safety Program. Each year in Texas, classes led by more than 500 volunteers, graduate more than 20,000 people.

Interested drivers can easily access the course through classes held in hospitals, senior centers, sheriff’s departments and other local offices. Or you can enroll in an online version. There are no official tests to pass in order to graduate from the program; Students who have completed the program may be eligible to receive an automobile insurance discount.
