En español |To recognize and thank military veterans for their service, the AARP Driver Safety Program is offering a free classroom course to all military personnel — active duty, retired, guard or reserve — regardless of age, from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, 2011.

This offer, which waives the normal course registration fee, is available to individuals who serve or have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard/Reserves or Coast Guard. Spouses (including widows and widowers) are also eligible to take the classroom course, free of charge.

Why take the course?

Cars have changed since you first received your driver’s license – so have the traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. The AARP Driver Safety course teaches valuable defensive driving techniques and provides a refresher about the rules of the road. Plus, by completing the classroom course you could qualify for an automobile insurance discount from your insurance company. (Contact your insurance agent for more details.)

Is the promotion valid for a free online course?

No. The “Veterans Promotion” is only valid for the classroom course.

How do I receive the free classroom course?

You can find a classroom course location by checking the course locator or by calling 888-AARP-NOW (888-227-7669).  Pre-registration is required and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to mention the "Veterans Promotion." When you show up for the course, you will need to present a form of military identification. Examples include but are not limited to a military ID, discharge papers (DD Form 214), American Legion card, dependent ID card (DD Form 1173), or a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) card.

When can I take the course?

To receive the free driver safety course, the entirety of the course must occur during the month of November. Two-day courses that start in October and finish in November, or start in November and finish in December, do not qualify for this promotion.

I’ve taken the AARP Driver Safety Program course before. Can I take the course for free in November, even though I’m not a first-time participant?

Yes. Any eligible veteran, military member or military spouse or may take any version of the Driver Safety Program classroom course for free in November. This includes the four-hour, four-hour refresher, six-hour, or eight-hour classroom course. (Required course lengths vary by state.)
