Stay Safe on Your Road Trips this Summer

As the beach gear comes out and the vacation planning begins, this is a good time to review some of the basic skills and rules that can keep us safe on the road. Since 1979, more than 10 million people have completed the AARP Driver Safety Program.

Available to everyone, the AARP Driver Safety Program focuses on:

  • Accident prevention measures, new traffic laws and rules of the road
  • How to deal with aggressive drivers and road rage
  • How medications may affect driving
  • How to safely use anti-lock brakes, air bags and safety belts
  • How to minimize distractions, including cell phone use, while driving

The program can also be effective in helping consumers identify signs that older loved ones may need to slow down and drive less. Research shows that, as a group, older drivers are generally some of the safest on the road, with the lowest crash rates per thousand drivers, lowest rates of alcohol impairment, and the highest rate of seat belt use.

Nevertheless, older drivers can be more physically vulnerable than other drivers. They typically have higher fatality rates than other age groups, are more likely than younger drivers to be severely injured in an accident, and to have a more difficult recovery. Learning and properly using the skills taught in the Driver Safety Course can reduce the risk associated with driving so families feel safer on the road.

It is easy to become distracted when making those long road trips with the family to your summer destination spots.  This course can help you by giving you tips on how not to become distracted.  The Drivers Safety Course can give you the tools you need to stay safe on the road so that you can enjoy your vacation safely.

As a bonus, many insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who have successfully completed this convenient and affordable program.

Recently, Patricia Davenport, on behalf of the AARP Driver Safety Program, accepted a Joint Legislative Resolution at its State Leadership Meeting.  Classes are offered regularly all across .
