Tune up and stay safe on the roads this Spring
The season for increased travel is upon us as many Mainers start taking advantage of the more pleasant weather by planning more road trips. Perhaps now more than ever it is important to think of those loved ones who may have more trouble than others navigating our roads safely.
Sometimes, family members might notice that certain loved ones are having trouble driving. There are several approaches adult children can consider when helping their loved ones stay safe on the road. For example, drivers can begin to adjust their driving patterns to certain times of day, to more familiar routes and to safer weather conditions. Families can also urge their loved ones to speak with a doctor about the effects their medications and overall health may be having on their ability to drive.
No matter the situation, We Need to Talk (WNTT) helps adult children better understand how to speak with their parents about driver safety and how to approach the topic of making the decision to hand over the car keys. WNTT can also help adult children become aware of certain warning signs that it may be time to suggest some alternative methods of transportation.
AARP also offers a convenient way for all of us to take proactive steps towards improving their driving knowledge and skills. For over twenty years AARP has taught a driver safety course geared towards older citizens but open to anyone interested. The course is offered in classroom settings as well as online.
