Vehicular Deaths

Traffic fatalities claim thousands of lives every year. Here are the numbers in each state and D.C. in 2009

Getting from one place to another has its risks for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists. Thousands of people are killed in traffic fatalities every year. The good news, especially for an aging population, is that through the complete streets program more and more communities are planning roads and sidewalks (or repairing them) to be safer. More good news: As a country we're on the right road to safer travel. In 2009, there were 33,808 vehicular deaths — a 10 percent decrease from 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Our interactive map shows the number of vehicular deaths in each state and D.C.
