As the boomer generation begins turning 65 this year, one of the many issues it faces is driving: When is it time to hang up the keys?

See also: Talking with older drivers.

While 65 is in most cases a little young for most to seriously consider giving up driving, millions of Americans over 50 have parents in their '70s, '80s, and '90s, and for them the issue is front and center.  When to hang up the keys is an emotional topic, especially when adult children broach the subject with their aging parents, or other older relatives.

In America, driving equals freedom and independence; losing it often leads to anger and depression and feelings of isolation.  We explore how to talk to a loved one about hanging up the keys and what states are doing to help drivers assess their own driving skills.
