The New Easy Riders

They were born to be wild, but the reality of age and dwindling physical prowess are forcing older motorcyclists to switch to a milder alternative—trikes. The dudes and babes who used to burn rubber on two-wheel bikes are moving to three-wheel versions to maintain their road cool and preserve aging body parts.

“Often these are riders who are more comfortable handling a touring rig that does not require balance,” says Pete Terhorst, spokesman for the American Motorcyclist Association. Experts say modern trikes make long rides more comfortable and come with reverse-gear options. They are also easier for other motorists to spot on the road.
