Take Control of Clutter Chaos

Are you a pack rat who saves everything because somebody might need it someday? Are you tired of being surrounded by so much stuff that you don't know what you have, can't put everything away or can’t find things when you want them? Are you putting off a move because you’re dreading the process of downsizing? Does your clutter cause you to feel anxious, nervous and worried? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may want to join AARP Montana and the Montana State Library for a Clutter-Buster workshop by nationally renowned organizational expert Rita Emmett.

Clutter drains your energy, affects your efficiency, and adds to your stress. Clutter is a chief source of anxiety, headaches, embarrassment and can even lead to depression. Rita Emmett will help you take control of your possessions rather than allowing your possessions to take control of you.

Ideally, many people would like to stay in their own homes forever. But that isn't always possible. Empty-nesters looking at downsizing first need to deal with years of accumulation before paring down their belongings. Additionally, there is a growing number of older Montanans moving into condos, active adult communities and assisted living facilities or moving to be near or with family members. Such moves from the family residence which everyone called home for decades have increased dramatically over the past few years and will continue to rise as baby boomers retire. Reducing the number of possessions you have acquired over the years, or downsizing while still living in your current home, represents an important new direction in your life in order to best prepare for the future.

The experience of downsizing a family home and having to move at the same time can be overwhelming, stressful and wrought with emotional turmoil. So many decisions have to be made. However, taking your time can result in good decisions about what to keep, donate, give away or discard. It is much easier to sort through your house before you put it on the market, rather than rushing through the process when the house sells.

"Recovered Pack Rat" Rita Emmett believes that clutter doesn't come from being lazy or disorganized or messy, it simply comes from habits. Rita Emmett will discuss the four habits that underlie the accumulation of clutter and will outline a plan and tips for taming the clutter tiger. She'll discuss how to conquer clutter once and for all, and how to establish systems so things can be found more easily. Rita Emmett is convinced that once we break the pack rat habit, we not only become more productive and achieve higher goals, we also become more energized and less stressed.

The Clutter-Buster workshop will give you insight and direction as well as proven pointers, methods, and strategies to control the clutter chaos. During the presentation, Rita Emmett will reveal:
