The 2013 AARP Survey of Pennsylvania Residents Age 50+ on Telecommunications

AARP’s Pennsylvania State Office, in response to its commitment to ensure reliable telecommunications service for all residents, commissioned this survey to explore the views of residents age 50+ on their telephone service.

Key findings include:

  • 94% of residents are satisfied with their landline telephone service and 80 percent are unlikely to cancel this service and use only a cell phone for all of their calling needs.
  • Seventy-four percent strongly oppose allowing landline telephone service providers to stop service in rural parts of the state.
  • About three in five oppose legislation that would take away the PUC’s authority to oversee the rates charged (58%) and the quality of services provided (61%) by landline telephone service providers in Pennsylvania.

These results are based on a telephone survey fielded August 29 to September 7, 2013 of 802 Pennsylvania residents age 50 and older.  For more information, contact Joanne Binette at 202-434-6303.
