AARP's Oklahoma Office commissioned this transportation assessment for those aged 50+  in Pottawatomie County.  Survey findings will be used for state planning and advocacy efforts for AARP Oklahoma.

Key findings include:

  • Two-thirds of residents are not familiar with public transportation in their communities.
  • The vast majority (93%) of residents do not use any type of public transportation. However, approximately one quarter of residents would use public transportation if it was affordable and easily accessible in their communities.
  • Over nine in ten (93%) of all Pottawatomie County residents drive when they need to get around for things like shopping, visiting the doctor, running errands or other activities.
  • Pottawatomie County residents are very interested in safety for pedestrians on busy streets in their communities. Nearly all respondents (99%) feel safe walking space is extremely or very important.

The mail survey was fielded from October 19th, 2012 through November 16th, 2012 among 4,000 residents 50 years or older living in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The sample was drawn from Marketing Systems Group. For more information, please contact Aisha Bonner at abonner@aarp.org.
