Help A Child Learn to Read

A growing problem

More than 65 percent of greater Boston's third graders struggle with literacy, putting them at a higher risk for school failure. A recent study found that students who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave without a diploma than proficient readers.

You can help

This fall, volunteer with Generations Incorporated, proud affiliate of AARP Experience CorpsSM, at one of 15 public schools or after-school programs in Boston and Revere. Generations Incorporated, a Boston-based nonprofit organization, will match you with a child who needs help developing literacy skills. With individual time and guidance, each student has the chance to improve his or her reading by two to three levels.

Several options for volunteering are available during the 2012-2013 school year to accommodate various interests and schedules. Training is provided. Volunteers may contribute as few as two hours per week or as many as ten.
