Enter Grandparents Day Essay Contest

In celebration of the critical importance of grandparents to North Dakota families, AARP North Dakota is once again sponsoring a “Why I Love My Grandparents” essay contest this summer.

The free contest is open to North Dakota students ages 6-18 in public or private schools, elementary to high school. Deadline for submission of essays is Aug. 17.

“Grandparents are a pillar of emotional, spiritual and financial support to the contemporary family,” said Janis Cheney, AARP North Dakota’s State Director. “By sponsoring this essay contest, we hope to reinforce and celebrate the role grandparents play in our lives.”

One overall winner will receive a $500 grand prize at a ceremony in conjunction with Grandparents Day on Sept. 9. Second and third place overall winners will receive awards of $250 and $100.

Essays can be written about a grandparent or grandparents, living or deceased. Essays must be written in English and be typed or legibly handwritten. Essays should not exceed 300 words for elementary students (ages 6-10); 500 words for middle school students (ages 11-14); 750 words for high school students (ages 15-18).

Essays will be judged primarily on content and creativity, but also on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and penmanship.

Complete ‘Why I Love My Grandparents’ essay contest rules

The AARP North Dakota “Why I Love My Grandparents” essay contest is under way. Submission deadline is August 17, 2012.

Essays must comply with the following contest rules:

  • Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each contestant and must reflect contestant’s own writing and original thinking.
  • Essay can be written about a grandparent or grandparents, living or deceased.
  • Essays must be written in English and be typed or legibly handwritten.
  • Word count up to 300 words for elementary students (ages 6-10); 500 words for middle school students (ages 11-14); 750 words for high school students (ages 15-18).

AARP has the right to edit, publish or otherwise duplicate any essay entered into the contest without payment to the author. Appropriate acknowledgment will be given to the writers.

Eligibility Requirements: All students (in public, private and home schools) enrolled in grades 1-12 residing in the state of North Dakota are eligible for the essay contest. There is no cost to enter the contest. Students who have family members employed by or serving as Executive Council members of AARP North Dakota or serving as contest judges are not eligible to participate.

Judging will be completed by a panel of qualified judges. Scoring criteria will be identical for all divisions (Elementary, Middle, and High School). Essays will be judged using these criteria:

  • Level of impact, influence, and significance: 40 points
  • Creativity (Phrasing and style): 30 points
  • Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling: 20 points
  • Neatness/Penmanship: 10 points

Awards: The top entry in each division will qualify for the $500 grand prize. The winning essays will also be featured on the AARP North Dakota website. Statewide winner announced on or near September 9, 2012. One statewide first-place winner will be selected as the overall winner of the $500 grand prize. The statewide second-place winner will receive $250; and the statewide third place winner $100. All participants will receive a certificate of participation and gift.

Winners are solely responsible for paying all applicable federal, state, and local taxes as well as any other costs and expenses associated with the acceptance and use of any prize not specified herein as being awarded.
