Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Where to Go for More Help

There are a number of websites with information that can help you make a well-informed decision about your prescription drug coverage:

Medicare has a plan finder tool to help you find a drug plan that meets your personal needs.  Medicare representatives are also available to help on the telephone at 1-800-633-4227 (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) have counselors that help you if you need individual assistance with Medicare issues. You can also call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 to find a SHIP counselor in your state.

The Access to Benefits Coalition can help you learn about and enroll in the Medicare prescription coverage. This help is available online or in person.

The Social Security Administration or your state and local Medicaid office can determine whether you are eligible for “Extra Help” with paying for Medicare Part D deductibles, premiums, and copays. Applying online is the fastest way to find out if you’re eligible or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

If your income (in 2006) is at or below $14,700 for a single person and $19,800 for a married couple living together and assets (in 2006) are below $11,500 for a single person or $23,000 for a married couple living together, you are encouraged to apply. This asset amount includes things like stocks, bonds, and savings and assumes that $1,500 of your savings are intended to be used towards burial costs. Couples can have $3,000 for the burial savings. Your home, car, and other personal items are not considered assets for Medicare Part D. Income limits may increase slightly each year.

AAA’s provide information and access to programs and services for older people. You can also call 1-800-677-1116 to find the AAA in your community.
