Passing of Noted Expert on Aging Issues

“It is with deep sadness that AARP notes the death of Robert N. Butler, MD, this past weekend. As founding director of the National Institute on Aging and creator of America's first department of geriatric medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical School, Dr. Butler inspired generations of researchers and worked tirelessly on behalf of older persons.

"Dr. Butler’s book, Why Survive?, won the Pulitzer Prize and helped put aging issues at the center of public policy discussions. A tireless advocate in pursuit of social justice, his life’s work enhanced the lives of older people in the United States and abroad. Dr. Butler was a friend of AARP and worked with us over many years in common cause."
