The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has awarded AARP Arizona Associate State Director of Advocacy Lupe Solis with its 2006 F.B.I. Community Service Award for outstanding and dedicated service in the community. The award is given to individuals who contribute time to improving the quality of life for all residents of Arizona.
Solis was recognized by LULAC for her work in bringing information about the new Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit to Spanish-speaking residents in Hispanic communities statewide. During the initial enrollment period for Medicare Part D, Solis conducted numerous public forums about the Part D benefit in which she presented information in Spanish and helped answer residents' questions about the new coverage.
"I'm honored to have been chosen for this distinguished award and wish to thank everyone at the League of United Latin American Citizens for this special recognition," said Solis who joined AARP Arizona as its director of advocacy in 2001.
Solis has a background in public administration. Before joining AARP, she spent 28 years in state government, where she began her work at the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Later, she served as Acting Executive Director of the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging where she helped develop legislative proposals and planning strategies to improve the quality of life for the state's elderly. Some of the programs she worked to implement include the Arizona Intergenerational Advocacy Partnership Program, the Arizona Senior Fitness 2000 Program and the biannual Governor's Conference on Aging.
Currently, Solis serves on the boards and committees of several local aging and advocacy associations including the Concilio Latino de Salud, the Beatitudes Campus of Care, the Administration of Choices and Resources, the Foundation for Senior Living's OASIS Program, and the University of Arizona's Center on Aging Executive Committee. She is also a former President of the National Board of Directors of the Older Women's League.
