Beginning Nov. 15, it's time once again for Medicare beneficiaries to decide if a Medicare Part D plan is right for them, and if so, which plan they will choose.

The 2007 enrollment period, which runs through Dec. 31, also allows those who already have a Medicare Part D plan to choose a different plan if they so desire. On the contrary, those people who are happy with their current Medicare prescription drug plan will not need to take any action during the open enrollment period in order to keep their coverage.

For 2007, Medicare beneficiaries will have more prescription drug plans to chose from, many of which have enhanced benefits including coverage for more medications and coverage through the gap or "doughnut hole."

"AARP is pleased that there will not be an increase in average premiums, and that there are affordable options to meet everyone's needs," said AARP Ohio State President Joanne Limbach.

In Ohio alone, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to choose from over 60 approved plans for their prescription drug coverage. Plan information is readily available on the Ohio Department of Insurance Prescription Drug Web site.

"AARP is also taking the initiative in educating our members on how to choose a prescription drug plan that best suits their needs," adds Limbach.

One of the ways AARP is educating members is with the wealth of information on its Medicare Rx Educational Guide. Members can find AARP online publications on what to look for when choosing a plan, information on low-income Medicare beneficiary options, and an Ohio Medicare Rx Fact Sheet with Ohio organizations and resources to help with prescription drug costs.

Medicare beneficiaries who need extra help in paying for their prescription drug premiums and copays can apply for the Limited Income Subsidy. Beneficiaries who receive notification after Jan. 1, 2007 that they are not approved for the Limited Income Subsidy cannot enroll in a plan until Nov. 15, 2007 and will incur the late enrollment penalty. Beneficiaries who enroll in a prescription drug plan at the same time they apply for Extra Help will ensure coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2007, whether or not they are approved for Extra Help.
