Learn How to 'Mind your Mouth'

You may already be aware that certain medications can make your mouth feel dry. But did you know that “dry mouth” can lead to significant tooth decay and gum disease? Or that poor oral health is linked to heart disease, diabetes and other serious health conditions?

In fact, a person with chronic gum disease is almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as someone with healthy gums.

Learn the facts and ask questions of the experts when you join AARP and Washington Dental Service Foundation for a live telephone town hall meeting on oral health Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time).

To participate in this free event, register online. Select the green “register” box to fill out the form. You must provide your home telephone number. You will be called by AARP at approximately 10:30 a.m. Nov. 15.

The telephone town hall meeting is part of a “Mind Your Mouth” campaign by the Washington Dental Service Foundation to educate older adults about the importance of maintaining good oral health habits and preventing and treating dry mouth.

Dry mouth is common among seniors – afflicting one in three adults age 65 and older – because seniors are more likely to be on multiple medications, including treatments for high blood pressure, pain and depression, that have dry mouth as a potential side effect. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and certain health conditions, including diabetes and Parkinson’s, can also cause dry mouth.

Washington Dental Service (WDS) Foundation is a non-profit organization funded by Washington Dental Service, the leading dental benefits company in Washington State. The Foundation is dedicated to significant, long-lasting improvements in the oral and overall health of Washington’s young children and seniors.
