Health Policy Experts Discuss How Greater Transparency Can Achieve Better Health Care Outcomes at Lower Cost

On June 12th, the Honorable Ron Wyden, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, was the keynote speaker for a health care transparency forum hosted by AARP and Business Roundtable at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Bringing together congressional leaders, CEOs and health policy experts, the panel discussion explored how increasing transparency in the health care marketplace — providing more reliable and complete information about cost and quality — can empower consumers to make better decisions about their care.

In his keynote, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee chairman stressed that having better access to, and utilization of, data could have the capacity to completely change the health care landscape in the United States.

“In the blink of an eye, big data can knock down these health care silos connecting providers across settings and states,” said Sen. Wyden, who is working with Sen. Chuck Grassley on an effort to harness healthcare data to improve the healthcare system.

“It can put patients and consumers in the driver seat of their own care. And it can help doctors identify patterns, in real time, to deliver better care.”

After the keynote address, the roundtable included a panel discussion on opportunities and challenges to health care transparency. Moderated by USA Today health care and consumer reporter Jayne O’Donnell, the panel of guests representing the private sector included: Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group; Gary W. Loveman, chairman, CEO and president of Caesars Entertainment Corporation; Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Caremark Corporation; and Peter R. Orszag, vice chairman of Citigroup, Inc.

The roundtable is a part of an ongoing partnership between AARP and the Business Roundtable to address key challenges in U.S. health care.
