The Health Care Law & You

The Health Care Law and Preventive Services and Wellness Benefits

En español l There’s a lot to learn about the health care law. The law includes more preventive services and wellness benefits that help keep you and your family healthy, and catch health problems early.

For people with insurance

Most health plans, including Medicare, now cover more important preventive and wellness benefits with no deductibles and copayments.

These benefits include immunizations to protect you from health problems and screenings to detect them sooner. Examples may include screenings for breast, prostate and colon cancers and for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.

For people with Medicare

Medicare now pays for an annual wellness visit and a personalized prevention plan. You will be able to work with your doctor to create a personalized prevention plan to keep you as healthy as possible. The wellness visit may include the following:

  • An assessment of your health risks
  • Your updated medical history
  • A list of your current health care providers
  • A list of your current prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Your height, weight and blood pressure measurements
  • A screening schedule for appropriate preventive services for you to follow over the next five to 10 years
  • A list of your health risk factors along with treatment options

Medicare continues to cover a one-time Welcome to Medicare physical exam for people who are new to the Medicare program. This exam is available only once during the first 12 months of enrollment into the Medicare program. You cannot get both the Welcome to Medicare exam and the annual wellness visit during the first year you are enrolled. After that first year, you should take advantage of the annual wellness visit.

For people with a Medicare Advantage plan

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer Medicare-covered preventive services with no deductibles and copayments. The health care law does not require Medicare Advantage plans to offer preventive services at no additional cost to you. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you should check with your plan to confirm what are the deductibles and copayments for preventive services, if any.
