Good health is good for business

Health promotion promises universal benefits for employers, community leaders and program planners alike. Besides enhancing overall quality of life, good health is good for business; a recent review of 73 published studies found that health promotion programs represent a $1 to $3.50 cost-to-savings ratio. AARP offers a variety of tools, resources and programs to help you realize the health promotion's benefits today.

Workplace Health Promotion Tool Kit

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and AARP have collaborated to create a Web-based tool designed to support employers in a coordinated, systematic and comprehensive approach to initiating and enhancing workplace health promotion activities.

Workforce health promotion efforts increase employee productivity, reduce absenteeism and protect an organization's bottom line. The tool kit provides a step-by-step process to assess, plan and execute activities to promote employees' health and create a healthy work environment.

CDC/AARP/AMA Preventive Services Report

In November 2009, the CDC, AARP and the American Medical Association (AMA) released Promoting Preventive Services for Adults 50-64: Community and Clinical Partnerships, a landmark report highlighting an opportunity to broaden the use of potentially life-saving preventive services among adults ages 50 to 64.

The report is available in a searchable, online format at It identifies a set of recommended preventive services, delineates successful strategies to promote and facilitate their delivery in community settings, and provides national and state-level data to monitor progress in ensuring these services reach this key population. Unique features are the inclusion of local data for 134 communities, printable reports and a hyperlinked resource list. This data can inform program planning, policy development and resource allocation.

Enhancing the Use of Clinical Preventive Services Among Older Adults: Closing the Gap

AARP partnered with the CDC, Administration on Aging, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and seven other organizations on a new report released March 14: "Enhancing Use of Clinical Preventive Services Among Older Adults: Closing the Gap." This report  — now available at  — examines eight Medicare covered preventive services (two vaccines, five screenings and smoking cessation counseling) for adults 65 and older. The report uses timely self-reported state and national data. 

Special features include highlighted gaps among racial and ethnic population groups, state-by-state data to see how your state measures up and effective strategies to build awareness, offer convenient access (including the AARP and Walgreens Wellness tours) in underserved communities, and the promotion and adoption of policies to increase access.

"Wise Up on Meds" Program in a Box

Nearly half of the U.S. population takes at least one prescription drug, while more than one-third of adults 45 or older are on three or more prescriptions. Help workforce and community members effectively manage prescriptions, reduce complications and achieve maximal health benefits with AARP's "Wise Up on Meds" Program in a Box, an interactive program documented to improve participants' medication management skills. This comprehensive tool kit contains everything you need to conduct a program for up to 25 participants on the wise use of medication, including a 25 minute video, brochures, quizzes and personal medication records.

Caregiving Resources

Today, 43.5 million adults are providing care for someone 50 or older. Seventy-five percent of these caregivers were employed while caregiving and nearly 70 percent said they needed to make a workplace accommodation related to their caregiving responsibilities. Productivity losses related to caregiving cost U.S. employers $2,110 on average per employee annually. AARP provides a variety of resources to help your employees and community members succeed in this important endeavor:

  • AARP Foundation's Prepare to Care: A Planning Guide for Families (PDF) is a five-step program designed to guide an employee through the process of becoming a caregiver. Included with each step are checklists and assessments to help in the transition to caregiving.
  • AARP's Caregiver Resource Center is an online site providing information and tools on a wide range of caregiving topics, including tips on hiring a home care worker, preparing your home for caregiving and providing long-distance care.

Calculate the Financial Cost of Physical Inactivity

The Physical Inactivity Cost Calculator is a tool that allows program leaders, businesses and policymakers to estimate the financial costs of a physically inactive employee base or community. A followup feature offers guidance on how to best reallocate existing financial resources to support physical activity initiatives. The calculator computes physical inactivity costs by using a science-based formula to aggregate medical expenses, workers' compensation and lost productivity costs associated with physical inactivity.

Promoting Preventive Services Report

The percentage of adults up-to-date on clinical preventive services (screenings, immunizations and counseling) is strikingly low. Only 1 in 4 of the nearly 55 million Americans between 50 and 64 receives the core set of recommended preventive services. CDC, AARP and the AMA provided leadership to the development of the Promoting Preventive Services Report and interactive website to shine light on the increasing access and use of preventive services for this age group. Baseline data (national, state, regional and selected local) are easily accessed, successful strategies and calls to action are highlighted, and extensive resources and references are provided.
