The Development of Effective Medication Management Partnerships: The AARP New Hampshire Member Panel Survey 2006

AARP Member Opinion Research

In September 2005, AARP began a public awareness campaign to encourage New Hampshire members taking medications to improve how they manage these drugs by partnering with their families, friends, physicians and pharmacists. During the following year, surveys were conducted to determine the campaign’s impact among AARP members. Greater Nashua area members, who were potentially exposed to more “Medicines and You” information than those in other parts of the state, were found to have increased some methods of dealing with their medications while decreasing others. Similar increases and decreases in varying degrees were found among other Granite State AARP members.

Medication managing methods and the percent of change include:

Behavior Increases

  • sharing a list of all medications with doctors, +7%
  • asking doctors why a particular drug is prescribed, +1%
  • asking pharmacists about problems when combining medications, +5%
  • asking pharmacists about possible side effects of new medications, +3%
  • sharing a list of medications with pharmacists, +6%
  • carrying a list of all medications, +16%
  • having a list of all medications at home, +6%

Behavior Decreases

  • telling doctors about medication allergies, -1%
  • asking doctors when and how to take medications, -7%
  • talking with doctors before stopping a medication, -7%
  • asking doctors about possible side effects of new medications, -7%
  • asking doctors about problems when combining medications, -6%
  • telling pharmacists about allergic reactions, -10%
  • sharing list of medications with family/close friends, -1%
