New Online Tool Helps With Prescription Drug Choices

We all know prescription drugs help us get and stay healthy. And thanks to AARP and Consumer Reports Health, there’s a new online drug comparison tool to help consumers better understand their prescription drug choices.

“This is good news for anyone who takes prescription drugs, regardless of age,” said AARP New Hampshire State Director Kelly Clark. “AARP has done a considerable amount of work providing tips and tools to Granite Staters so they can become better medication managers. Now the just-launched AARP Drug Savings Tool offers even more.”

The AARP Drug Savings Tool allows users to select the drug they want to compare from Consumer Reports Health’s database of about 500 drugs in 26 drug classes. This is how the easy-to-use Drug Savings Tool works:

Step 1: Search for a drug

Step 2: Review a drug’s price range and effectiveness

Step 3: Learn more

“In three simple steps, people can compare prescription drug safety, effectiveness, and price,” added Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty member Dr. Cheryl Abel. “There’s even a discussion sheet to help guide conversations with doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals.”

Drug comparisons can help keep people healthy and save money. Making informed decisions about medication use is one key to good health.

“Pharmacists are thrilled when their customers are well educated on the drugs they are taking,” concluded Abel. “Don’t forget that over-the-counter medications are drugs, too. Or that keeping a personal medication record and taking it with you every time you access the health system is very important.”
