The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) can provide you with contact information for two to three board-certified geriatric psychiatrists in your geographic area—or the geographic area of someone about whom you care. You may also ask your family doctor to refer you to a geriatric psychiatrist.

If you're trying to help a parent or family member, keep in mind that the "how" may be just as important as the "who." "Older people are fearful of seeing psychiatrists because they fear the next stop is a nursing home," says Gary J. Kennedy, M.D., director of the division of geriatric psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and a past AAGP president.

Use AAGP's online referral service, or write to AAGP, Suite 1050, 7910 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda, MD 20814-3004.
