SEGMENT FOUR
Even with access to health insurance or public assistance programs, many Hispanics do not use their benefits to the maximum. Cultural barriers, limited English, and the high cost of deductibles are some of the reasons Hispanics do not look for or cannot obtain medical or preventive services. This is the case of Juan Girón, a Medicare beneficiary in Washington, DC who has fallen through the medical cracks because of his inability to navigate the system.
SEGMENT FIVE
In the second part of her story, Virginia Garcia she shares her personal struggle as she dealt with cancer and the critical support she received from her husband. Caregivers are crucial in the Hispanic community, and research shows that one in every four Hispanics cares for a family member suffering with a chronic condition. Often, they suffer alone from the emotional and economic difficulties of caring for a loved one.
SEGMENT SIX
Dr. Huerta interviews public-health specialist Dr. Annette Ramirez of Latinos for National Health Insurance. They discuss the need for health access and the resources available to the community. They also highlight the need to increase the numbers of Hispanic health professionals. Serving this need is Bravo Medical Magnet High School an award-winning Los Angeles school training Hispanic students for future careers in health and medicine.
