Sue Saunders, 77, was one of the first women over the age 50 to go public with her HIV status. “The guy I was so madly in love with had tested positive for HIV," said Saunders, disclosing how she got infected with the disease.

As part of the Graying of Aids Project, photographer Katja Heinemann and writer Naomi Schegloff made a moving photo essay. Saunders has lived with AIDS for nearly 20 years. She still remains on a daily HIV medication, and fights to raise awareness and promote safe sex among seniors.
