Donate Blood during AARP’s Day of Service Blood Drive, May 10-12

AARP of Michigan is again teaming up with the American Red Cross for the second annual AARP Day of Service blood drive. The event, "A Day of Service: A New Chance at Life", will feature a three-day blood donation drive. AARP members, along with their families and friends, are encouraged to visit a blood donation site in their area on May 10, 11 or 12.

Jean Pisha, an AARP Michigan member, participated in last year's blood drive both as a volunteer and as a blood donor and will be participating in this year's event as well. Pisha believes giving blood is important and she encourages all AARP members to participate in this year's blood drive with her.

"I believe seniors in general are always expressing their needs and wants to AARP and the public at large," Pisha said. "We have a tendency to forget that we need to participate in giving back to the community. We cannot just take from society, and giving blood is simple and very rewarding. I encourage all of my fellow AARP members to participate in this year's blood drive, as the blood you donate may save a life!"

The need for blood donations is great. In Michigan hospitals, patients need about 2,000 blood products daily. That's one patient every 12 seconds.

"One never knows when they will be in need of blood and wouldn't it be a sad state of affairs if there wasn't enough blood to help you or someone you know and love," Pisha said.

The AARP Day of Service reaffirms AARP's legacy of service. Plan now to give blood on May 10, 11 or 12, and encourage others to be part of this important event. Call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543) to find a blood donation site near you.
